Conversation on the Record “Long Time Comin'” with Micky & the Motorcars

I’m a little late on this post, the actual podcast episode with Micky and Gary (of Micky & the Motorcars) came out a few months ago. It all started when I forgot to take a picture with the guys following our Conversation. I thought “no big deal, this was my favorite band in college. I have tons of pictures with them!”

Turns out, I don’t have tons of pictures with them. At least not right at this moment. The external hard drive that holds my entire iTunes library and all of my old pictures and videos gave up the ghost. And all of the boxes with the the physical pics (this was after all, mid 2000s) are all in storage. Facebook was all I had, so the few pics you see are what I had uploaded there, way back when.

I didn’t plan to take most of 2019 off from creating podcasts. However, an unintended career change (I left radio to take a job with a company that sells baseball bats, Warstic) left me with little time to line up conversations. As I settled in to my new job, I saw that Micky and the Motorcars were releasing a new record after a long break from the studio. Seemed like the right band to start a conversation with.

The Conversation

I sat down with Micky and Gary backstage at Billy Bob’s Texas. What I thought was going to be a quick conversation went longer then planned, and I’m totally ok with it. An audio note for when you’re listening, Gary’s mic fell of at some point, so I had to do a little adjusting (hence the distortion) so you could hear him.

Micky and the Motorcars “Long Time Comin'” is slowly working its way into being my favorite record of theirs. As I mentioned in the conversation, it’s a mature record. Not mature, as in content, but mature as in a band finally settling in to their sound.

From the start, Micky’s songwriting has always been the backbone of the band’s sound. The rest of the songs (be it covers, co-writes or contributions from other band members) seem to drive the direction and feel of each record. “Long Time Coming'” is once again anchored by Micky’s songs, but for the first time, Gary brought the rest of the songs to the table. I think that made this record the most “Motorcars” sounding record yet.

Listen to “Long Time Comin'”

My preferred method of listening is vinyl, pick up “Long Time Comin'” on wax at a Motorcars show or from their website. Or stream it below with Apple Music or click HERE to download it from iTunes.

And if the Motorcars are in town, go see them live. Especially if it’s an opportunity to catch them acoustic (those were always my favs). See when they’ll be in your area HERE.

Finally, subscribe to Conversation on the Record so you don’t miss a single episode. Podcast subscribers always get the new episode before I share the link anywhere else. Find it on Apple PodcastGoogle Play and now Spotify!
