Conversation on the Record “What It’s Like To Fly Alone” with Courtney Patton

Courtney Patton is one artist I have always been a fan of but never met in real life. I saw that her new record was set to release on February 16, so I knew she should be my first interview of 2018. Last year, life got in the way so I wasn’t able to get more episodes out. Now my schedule is a lot more consistent so the only thing to work around is the artist’s schedule.

Looking at Courtney’s schedule, I saw that she was playing Pearl Snap Kolaches‘ Hangover Series. I had heard great things about this series and always wanted to attend. Everything worked out, I ate some tasty kolaches, listened to Courtney do a fantastic acoustic set, then we sat down for the Conversation on the Record “What It’s Like To Fly Alone”.

What It’s Like To Fly Alone

I think my favorite quality of Courtney’s songwriting are her honest, open lyrics. Especially on the songs she takes on the lyrics solo. But the co-writes are equally engaging. They each add another layer to the record, with Courtney partnering with Larry Hooper, Matt Hillyer, & Micky Braun to bring the songs to life. So many things in this record just work, in addition to the songwriting. Courtney took the helm on the production this go-round, with input form trusted voices and a slew of ace players.

This record is exactly why I wanted to do this podcast. You listen to an album and form your own conclusions. Then when you learn the story and the background of how the song came to be, it gives you an even greater appreciation. Nothing makes me happier than nerding out with a songwriter about the process in making their record, and I hope you, the podcast listener feel like you are sitting right there at the table with me and Courtney, soaking in the conversation too.

Big thank you again to the folks at Pearl Snap Kolaches in Fort Worth. They were kind enough to let me hang out after Courtney’s set to record this interview. Check their website to see who is playing their Hangover Music series at the White Settlement Road location. Also, sign up for their rewards club, that’s how I scored my free Topo Chico!
